Ask anyone - what is the capital of Alaska - and at best get an answer - "Anchorage". In fact, the capital of Alaska - a town Juneau. It is located in the south of the peninsula and get to it can only by air or water - to the capital is not suitable, no way. The city was founded in 19 century; the population of Juneau is now 40,000. At the end of the last century seriously discussed to move the capital to Anchorage, but Alaskans, calculate the cost of the move, decided to leave the capital until the on-site. The city stretches in an intimate cove at the foot of Mount Juneau, Mount Roberts.
Alaska is one of the biggest states in terms of area in the United States comprising about 663,268 square miles. In terms of population, Alaska only ranked 47th among other states with 710,231 total populations as of year 2010. The Capital of Alaska is the borough and city of Juneau, located in the Gastineau Channel. The City of Juneau has been Alaska's capital city since 1906 when the US Congress in 1900 declared to move the capital city from Sitka to Juneau. The original land area of Juneau is not that big but it expanded when the various municipalities in the surrounding area merged and unified with the capital city in 1970 including the city of Douglas and other adjoining municipalities to form the current capital city.
Juneau, the capital of Alaska, is even bigger than the whole state of Delaware and Rhode Island combined. The borough has a total land area of 3,225 square miles which is the 3rd largest municipality in whole United States. Juneau is the only state capital of United States that borders another country which is the eastern border of British Colombia's Canadian province. According to the town's history, the name Juneau was derived from gold and mineral explorer named Joe Juneau. But the previous names of Juneau were Rockwell and Harrisburg.
Despite the large area, Alaska has relatively low population rate. In Juneau, the primary employment provider is the government itself. Aside from the government, the only next largest contributor the state's economy is its tourism sector during the months of May to September. The only higher education institute in the capital city is the University of Alaska Southeast which is known for their main researches on Juneau ice fields and the Tongass National Forest. Compared to the wrong notion of very cold climate all around Alaska, the capital of Alaska has relatively moderate or mild climate. Winters are only somewhat cold while the summer, fall and spring are mild to cool. Snowfall usually comes in the month of November to March averaging about 84 inches. The driest months happen during the spring climate while the wettest months are considered to be the months of September and October. |
